		<content type="html"><![CDATA[Bob Herbert <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/">responds</a> to Hillary Clinton's assertion that working-class white voters won't vote for Barack Obama because he's Black.<br><br><span style="font-weight: bold;">--So there was Hillary Clinton cold-bloodedly asserting to USA Today
that she was the candidate favored by “hard-working Americans, white
Americans,” and that her opponent, Barack Obama, the black candidate,
just can’t cut it with that crowd.</span><p style="font-weight: bold;">“There’s a pattern emerging here,” said Mrs. Clinton.</p><p style="font-weight: bold;">There is, indeed. There was a name for it when the Republicans were
using that kind of lousy rhetoric to good effect: it was called the
Southern strategy, although it was hardly limited to the South. Now the
Clintons, in their desperation to find some way — any way — back to the
White House, have leapt aboard that sorry train.</p><p style="font-weight: bold;"><span class="italic">He can’t win! Don’t you understand? He’s black! He’s black!</span>  </p><span style="font-weight: bold;">...</span><br style="font-weight: bold;"><br style="font-weight: bold;"><span style="font-weight: bold;">The Clintons should be ashamed of themselves. 		<content type="html"><![CDATA[On May 2nd, 2008, Mildred Loving, 68, passed away from pneumonia.<br><br><img src="http://images.quickblogcast.com/32894-30746/29liptak_190.jpg" border="0" width="190"><br><br>Ms. Loving was <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2008/05/06/us/06loving.html?hp">banished from Virginia</a> for marrying a white man.&nbsp; Her experience led to the end of state miscegenation laws.<br><br><span style="font-weight: bold;">--In Loving v. Virginia, Warren wrote that miscegenation laws violated
the Constitution’s equal protection clause. “We have consistently
denied the constitutionality of measures which restrict the rights of
citizens on account of race,” he said.</span><p style="font-weight: bold;">By their own widely
reported accounts, Mrs. Loving and her husband, Richard, were in bed in
their modest house in Central Point in the early morning of July 11,
1958, five weeks after their wedding, when the county sheriff and two
deputies, acting on an anonymous tip, burst into their bedroom and
shined flashlights in their eyes. A threatening voice demanded, “Who is
this woman you’re sleeping with?”</p><p style="font-weight: bold;">Mrs. Loving answered, “I’m his wife.”</p><p style="font-weight: bold;">Mr. Loving pointed to the couple’s marriage certificate hung on the bedroom wall.
