The Anniversary of the Death of Steven Bantu Biko

September 12, 1977 is the date Steven Bantu Biko, anti-apartheid activist and Black freedom fighter, was brutally murdered in Pretoria, South Africa by police.  He was 30 years old.

Biko started out as a medical student but soon became overcome by the racist political climate in South Africa and became hyper-politicized founding South African Students' Organization (SASO) and working for the Black Community Programs (BCP).

The movie Cry Freedom was about his life.

Let the spirit of Biko give us strength to counter the vicious racist attacks that have been perpetrated against Black folks in such high-profile cases as the Jena Six, the New Jersey student murders, and the West Virginia rape, among other atrocities.
